Before I tried this, I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. Got2B products are pretty hyped up where I live and I’ve found that not all of them live up to the hype. At the price, I think it’s ideal for a gym bag, car, or on-the-go touchups. This product worked really well for me. My top complaint with many dry shampoos is residue, which is very apparent on my dark black hair. When I first sprayed this on, I was pretty sure it would be yet another dud. It still looked a little powdery when I ran my fingers through my hair but once I combed it through, it became invisible. The first time I used it, I was nervous about the residue so I sectioned it off and applied it to a small section to begin with. My hair is very thick and some dry shampoos that work well for my fine-haired friends don’t seem to do much for me. Got2B Rockin It Dry Shampoo actually managed to disperse well through my thick hair and I didn’t need to apply tons of it to have this effect. That alone is an amazing feat! One thing I didn’t like is the scent. It reminded me a bit of lemon pledge and not in a good way (I usually like lemon scents but this one seemed too chemical). Tresemme is a drugstore line of hair products that aims to offer salon quality at affordable prices. Some of their products do a decent job of achieving this goal, such as their Heat Tamer Style Spray and Flawless Curls Products. Unfortunately, their dry shampoo falls short of the mark. Yes, the price is indeed very low but the quality is equally low. We already know that cheap dry shampoos can perform just as well as salon brands (for example, Batiste dry shampoo) but this one could use some improvement.

Although the general consensus is that this is one product to skip, it does have a few devotees. This Tresemme Dry Shampoo review will outline the pros and cons and offer alternatives.

The Good

Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo isn’t a total bust. For starters, the bottle actually does a decent job of dispensing the product, something many of its more expensive counterparts have completely failed at. Spraying a powder isn’t always easy but this bottle manages to pull it off well.

It has a very pleasant citrusy fragrance that leaves your hair smelling fresh without being cloying. It leaves a subtle scent much like that left behind by real shampoo as opposed to smelling overwhelming like you sprayed your hair with perfume to cover up the fact that it hasn’t been washed in days.

It is easier to find than many other dry shampoo brands. Although you won’t find it in every drug store that sells Tresemme products, it is sold in more places than similar products in its price range.

It’s not tested on animals so animal lovers can rejoice, although I know of a few pets who could use a pleasant citrus fragrance. It’s also made in the USA, which is a big plus for the many Americans who prefer to buy products made in their country and support the economy.

The Bad

The main problem with this product is that it just doesn’t leave your hair looking any less greasy. Sure, it may smell cleaner but the telltale oiliness of unwashed hair is still evident. If you try to use more product to solve this problem, it only ends up looking powdery.

It tends to weigh your hair down, which is the last thing oily hair needs. Most of the better dry shampoos out there add volume. This one only makes my hair look flatter.

The powder doesn’t absorb. If you have darker hair like me, you will probably notice pretty visible traces of it coating your hair since the powder itself is white.

Bottom Line

Tresemme had a great opportunity here. There aren’t a lot of cheap dry shampoo products out there so they could have filled a product niche that is pretty lacking. Instead, with their half-hearted attempt at dry shampoo, Tresemme has really fallen short of expectations. With its special mineral clay formula, great scent, and well-designed bottle, this could have been a great product but after using it, we can only say that Treseme dry shampoo needs to go back to the drawing board.

Application

The biggest draw of this product is the special dispenser. Most dry shampoos use aerosol cans, which are not environmentally friendly. Even those who don’t use aerosol are typically sold in spray bottles. While spraying is a great way to get the product onto your hair, in reality these spray bottles often end up clogged and don’t dispense the product very well. Blow dry shampoo has solved this problem by using a special “poof” dispenser. You just sort of poof it onto your hair. There is no waiting like with other products- poof it on and rub it through. The company says a brush is not necessary- you can use your fingers because it applies so lightly and evenly. I found this to be true and certainly a lot more convenient.

Other Benefits

This is a sulfate-free dry shampoo that contains a pure protein blend. It is safe for color-treated hair and is keratin complaint as well, which means it is a very gentle option. Moreover, this product is not tested on animals.

Scent

Another good thing about Blow Faux dry shampoo is that it does not have any scent. There are some dry shampoos that smell fabulous but there are also some really offensive, cloying scents out there as well. Everybody has a different idea of what smells good, and even the nice smelling ones can clash with your perfume or lotion. It’s great that Blow decided to make this unscented dry shampoo because it means so many more people can use it, even the most sensitive of noses and yes, even men!

Price

One of the reasons it took me so long to try this is because of the price. It’s not that it’s terribly expensive compared to others, coming in at around the $20 mark, but the bottle just seems so small for the price. However, after using this for a while it became clear that this bottle was going to last so much longer than usual. If you’ve read my past reviews or have tried lots of dry shampoos, you have probably heard of at least one or two that seems to have less than five applications per bottle. Not Blow Faux. This one can last you several months of regular use simply because the application is so different.

The main purpose of dry shampoo is to reduce the appearance of oily hair and make your hair look freshly washed. In this regard, Powder Play does not fail. However, its true strength lies in its ability to give your hair a bit of lift. Note the name: Powder Play Volumizing & Texturizing Powder. This gives you a clue that its main goal isn’t so much the clean look as it is giving your hair some volume and texture. Looking limp is a common problem for unwashed hair but even people who do wash their hair regularly but have hair that just lacks oomph can benefit from this is as well. Not only does it lift the hair, it holds that lift for a surprisingly long time.

If you have ever tried to “back tease” your hair using hairspray, you know that it is not a simple process. This involves spritzing hairspray near the roots of your hair and combing it backwards repeatedly, which gives varying results and also results in a lot of breakage. On a good day, it can make your hair look a lot poofier, but on a bad day, it can leave you with a sticky hairspray mess and broken strands. This would also be a good choice to keep in your bag if you have to wear a hat and are worried about hat head. I do a lot of walking and would freeze without wearing a hat in the winter. Of course, this only makes my limp hair look even flatter once I take it off. I started keeping this in my bag so I could fluff my hair back up when I take my hat off and it works really well for that purpose. Now I can go from “hat head” to big sexy hair in no time at all!

So far, this is one of my favorite dry shampoo products. It’s similar to Schwarzkopf Osis Dust It in the sense that it’s really more for volume than oil absorption, although it easily accomplished both. Those whose hair does not lack volume might not be as impressed as I am, but if you have flat, limp hair, I strongly suggest giving Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Volumizing & Texturizing Powder a whirl.

If your main interest in using dry shampoo is to fake freshly washed hair, ALTERNA Caviar Dry Shampoo won’t disappoint. While other hair powders do other tricks and absorb grease almost as an afterthought, this one truly does make your hair look and feel like you just washed and blow dried it. It’s not a small feat and it’s great to get this look with only a fraction of the effort. Not only does it soak up oil from your hair but it also does a great job of absorbing excess product, so if you tend to overload your hair with shine serums, mousses, and other styling products, you can count on ALTERNA to clean up the mess and help you start over again.

ALTERNA dry shampoo also gets points for its packaging. Housed in a sleek dark purple bottle, the presentation is elegant and makes it a product you’d be proud to leave in plain sight on the shelves of your bathroom or vanity. The fact that it doesn’t use an aerosol pump like some dry shampoos makes it a great choice for environmentally conscious consumers. The bottle does a decent job of dispensing the product, although some people might find it easier to use by unscrewing the top section altogether and simply pouring it out into the palm of your hand.

Now, it doesn’t do a whole lot beyond making your hair look and feel clean. It does add a bit of volume but it doesn’t give you big full hair the way something like Osis Dust It does. The ingredients list in this product is pretty impressive. It doesn’t include talc, which is irritating to some people. Instead, you will find natural ingredients such as corn starch, tapioca starch, and soy protein. It’s supposed to be anti-aging. At first it was hard to imagine what they meant by that. It turns out that the ingredients are so gentle that they won’t make your hair look dull and damaged, which in many cases does make you look older.

Sometimes you can find 2-for-1 or half off deals. Also look at Sally’s Beauty Supply circulars for deals on brands they carry such as Batiste. Ulta often does promotions of higher-end brands so check their fliers as well. A bit of research can really pay off when it comes to finding dry shampoo sales.

With that out of the way, let’s look at what makes Tigi Rockaholic Dry Shampoo a good product. First, it accomplishes its goal of absorbing grease on the head nicely. It doesn’t get sticky unless your hair is already super oily and even then you can still get another day or so out of your washing using a bit of Rockaholic.

It manages to do all of this without leaving your hair looking ashy as some other dry shampoos do. However, it does make your hair look slightly duller than usual but definitely not greasy. It has a bit of a strong scent at first, very similar to the tropical fragrance to other Tigi products, but the scent fades pretty quickly and settles into something quite subtle that someone would need to be close to your hair to even notice.

The best way to use Bed Head dry shampoo is to flip your head over and spray it toward the roots then flip your head back over and comb it through with your fingers. If you have bangs you might need to put a small amount in the bang area as well. One of the best things about Tigi Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo is that you don’t need to comb it through a million times to get rid of all the traces of powder.

Oily hair tends to be a bit limp, especially after not washing for a few days. Tigi dry shampoo combats that issue as well by giving hair a bit of texture and volume. This helps you eliminate the look of having your hair plastered to your head and in that respect it can even be used to correct overapplication of shine serums and other hair styling oils.

Tigi has already corrected the issue with the old bottles not dispensing all of the product mentioned in older Rockaholic dry shampoo reviews and the new Tigi rockaholic dirty secret dry shampoo bottles should not have this problem. Just in case you do buy it somewhere that is selling old stock, there are a few things you can do to get the rest of the powder out of the bottle. You can try holding it upside down and then spraying. You can also run the bottle under hot water for a minute and then shake it and this should get the powder inside moving around enough to dispense.

TIGI dry shampoo is made with the same care that goes into their other products. If you’re a fan of their Catwalk Shampoo and Conditioner line or products like Bedhead After Party, you will probably be pleased with Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo as well. I think there are probably better dry shampoos out there if you are only looking to solve one specific problem but this one manages to do a decent job at everything a dry shampoo should do while avoiding the pitfalls many others fall into.

Coconut oil is unique compared to other oils typically used on hair such as mineral and sunflower oils because it can actually penetrate through the hair shaft to the scalp and infuse it with protein. This helps hair to grow stronger, have more body, and be less resistant to breakage. If your hair is lacking a bit of life, this is a great way to add some bounce. It also makes dry ends or split ends appear much healthier thanks to the fatty acids it contains. This oil moisturizes and fortifies hair in a way that no other treatment can.

Not just any oil or product labeled with coconut will do the job, however. First of all, coconut shampoo is easy to find but this does not carry the same benefits as the oil. Many of these shampoos only feature the fragrance of shampoo so you are going to have to look a bit harder to find what you need. A health food store or natural beauty aisle is a good place to start. You must use pure coconut oil for hair to reap the benefits so avoid the refined types. These lose all of the nutrients that help the hair during processing. That’s why it is essential to seek out something labeled as virgin coconut oil. For hair, the closest you can get to nature is usually a better choice so read labels and ingredients very carefully.

When you buy pure coconut oil, you might be surprised to find that it is not a liquid at all but rather is more of a wax. It only becomes a liquid at higher temperatures so some slight warming may be necessary before using it. It is usually enough to scoop a bit out and warm it slightly in your hand before applying it to your hair. If you purchase it in liquid form, there is a good chance it is not virgin coconut oil so again, make sure you are getting the real thing if you want to reap the benefits.

After warming the oil, apply it to dry or damp hair. Make sure hair is not dripping wet when you apply it. Pay extra attention to the scalp, massaging into the scalp so it can penetrate. Then distribute it all the way through to the ends of your hair using a comb. Put a shower cap on to help the oil stay in place while you do other things. It should be left on for a few hours or ideally overnight if possible. Stick to the lower range of time if your hair tends to be oily but try to sleep with it if you have really dry hair. Once it has had a chance to soak in, wash your hair and dry and style it as usual. Note that you may need to shampoo your hair twice to get all the oil out and you may want to skip conditioner. If you find that your hair looks too greasy the first time you use it, you can use dry shampoo to make your hair look less greasy and next time try using less oil.

Most people find that doing this intensive coconut oil for hair treatment once a week is plenty. This should help counteract the stripping effect of your shampoos as well as any heat styling you may do during the week. While you may want to do it more often than that at first to help restore your hair’s condition, you should eventually switch to once weekly for maintenance. Any more than that can be a bit of a hassle and really shouldn’t be necessary. As the condition of your hair improves, you may only need to use coconut oil once or twice a month.

After using natural coconut oil in your hair, you will start to notice less breakage and shiny hair. Straight hair will look more healthy and even and curly hair will have better curl separation and definition. This is a great place to start before shelling out for expensive treatments as many people find no need for high end deep conditioners once they try coconut oil. It’s a cheap and natural way to get beautiful hair.

The problem with many shampoos on the market is that they are too moisturizing. Indeed many people put their hair through the rigors of coloring and heat styling so there is a very large market for this. Clarifying shampoos remove buildup that accumulates in hair over time thanks to repeated use of hair spray, gel, and other styling products as well as conditioner. This buildup can weigh hair down and make it look even more greasy than it actually is. You don’t have to use a clarifying shampoo every day but it is often recommended that those with oily hair use a clarifier once per week to help get rid of everything that has accumulated over the week and start fresh.

Dry shampoo is perhaps the best shampoo for oily hair. This is a waterless shampoo so it helps cut down on time spent in the shower as well as drying and styling. Shake on a little bit of this powder and comb it through your hair and watch as it absorbs all the grease and makes your hair look dry and clean. Of course you’ll still need to wash your hair with traditional shampoo regularly but a few shakes of dry shampoo can be a quick fix when your hair looks embarrassingly dirty. It’s a lot easier to use a bit of powder shampoo on your way out the door than it is to wash and dry your hair all over again. Batiste Dry Shampoo is a budget-friendly yet very effective option that also gives your hair a boost of volume. Rene Furterer Dry Shampoo is perfect if you are looking for a green product. Like regular shampoos, there are plenty of formulations to meet every type of hair need but unlike regular shampoo, any type of waterless shampoo is perfectly suited for oily hair.

There are plenty of options when it comes to shampoo for oily hair. Now you know what to look for so read those labels carefully and you are sure to find something that does the job!

It is not uncommon to only get five or ten uses out of one of these bottles. The best approach is to spray a small amount to begin with, wait, comb through, and then determine if you need to add more. Spraying indiscriminately like you would with hairspray could leave you broke pretty quickly at about $25 a bottle.

One problem some people have with Naturia is the scent, but the scent does mellow with time. Rene Furterer prides itself on using only natural ingredients, and with a list that includes things like peppermint and orange oil, you might be expecting a refreshing and invigorating fragrance. Unfortunately, this has a very heavy smell in the beginning. However, it smells worst when it is being sprayed and the scent does fade quickly.

Is this product worth purchasing? If natural ingredients are very important to you and you are not planning to use it on the fifth day of not washing your hair, then yes, this is a good choice for you. But with so many other dry shampoos on the market, I think a lot of people might find something else that suits their needs better. For example, Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo leaves behind a fun summery scent and costs less than half of Naturia. Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo is a little pricier but it gives hair a lot of great volume and really makes your hair look a lot cleaner. I’d take either of those over this product. But Rene Furterer gets lots of props for coming up with such a natural formula.
